Cities and Memory has just revealed a new field recording project: Sounding Nature.
About Cities and Memory
Launched in 2014 by curator Stuart Fowkes as a way to blend geo-located field recordings and collaborative sound art remixes, the website accepts sound effect submissions, offers them to the community for remixing, and places the result on a map.
The web shop has evolved from one-off submissions to offer larger community projects that focus on sonic themes such as Sacred Spaces, Protest & Politics, and Dada Sounds.
The ‘Sounding Nature’ Project
Yesterday the site released its latest project: Sounding Nature. Drawn from the work of 250 artists, it showcases natural sounds from 55 countries paired with their designed interpretations: hurricanes, locusts, rainfall, waves, birds, and more.
What’s interesting is that each sound has notes on the original recording as well as every sound artist’s goal and interpretation. Contrasting the original field recording, the designed result, and the intent behind both makes for interesting reading, as well as enjoyable listening.
